SOS Children's Villages Faisalabad
SOS Children's Village Faisalabad was opened in 1988. The land was donated by the Government of the Punjab and many local philanthropists funded the family homes.
Formerly known as Lyallpur, Faisalabad is a city in the province of Punjab in Pakistan. It is the third largest city in Pakistan after Karachi and Lahore. Before the foundation of the city in 1880, the area was very thinly populated. The population has risen from 9,171 in 1901 to 179,000 in 1951 to over two million in 1998. The wider Faisalabad district had a population of over five million in 1998.
Community Spirit Within the Village
As in every location we work, SOS Children’s Village Faisalabad is dependent on the community for their support, as their involvement is vital for our operation and expansion. Functions are arranged on a regular basis by various donors and are greatly enjoyed by the children; as are outings to interesting sites.
The SOS youth home was opened in 1997 in a building donated for this purpose. The Village is well-established and, over the years, has benefited from upgrades and additions to the facilities, including renovation of the administrative offices and the addition of a spacious auditorium.
The first block of the SOS primary school was completed in 1995 and all the classes have been functioning in this building since then. The girls’ high school has also now been completed, whilst the boys’ high school was opened in March 2014.
Overall, the Faisalabad Village has been an immensely successful project with over 147 orphans and abandoned children being cared for and 283 children studying in the SOS school (Feb 2017).
